Skills Are Tools

Skills aren't just manually invocable Markdown files. OpenCode also exposes them through the native skill tool.

That means your agent can see which skills are available and choose one automatically when it fits the task.

You might be thinking, "Wait, aren't skills literally just a tool that returns a hard-coded string?"

Well... mostly yes. I mean, the skill directory can contain scripts and other files related to the prompt, but it's not much more than that.

Some people think there's going to be this global database of skills that we'll all download from. I think there's mostly just two kinds of useful skills:

  • Skills you and your team write that are hyper-specific to your project and workflow
  • Skills that are published alongside a library or API so that users of those products can give their agents instructions for how to use them more effectively.

Good skills are specific, not generalized "magic prompts".
