Formatting Dashboards

Formatting is what turns a dashboard from usable into professional. The data and charts might already be correct, but poor formatting can make everything harder to read and harder to trust.

Good formatting usually isn't very noticeable – it's when it's bad that people start to notice.

If someone notices the formatting is off before anything else, there's a problem.

Titles and Labels

Titles should explain what the viewer is looking at. Good titles:

  • Describe the insight, not just the metric
  • Are short and clear
  • Match across similar visuals

Bad titles usually look like raw field names or technical terms.

Alignment and Spacing

Clean alignment makes dashboards feel organized. In Power BI:

  • Align visuals to each other.
  • Keep spacing consistent.
  • Avoid overlapping or crowded visuals.

White space can help separate ideas and improves readability.

Assignment

Let's apply professional formatting to the Dashboard page we created.
