Codecademy vs freeCodeCamp: when is the paid plan worth a look?

FreeCodeCamp offers its curriculum, projects and certifications for free (which is incredible). Codecademy has free courses too, but full career-path access requires Pro. I'd start with freeCodeCamp unless a particular Codecademy sequence or paid feature made the subscription worthwhile to me.

One more option before you choose: Boot.dev is worth a look if you're aiming at backend development or devops, especially with Python and Go. I'd consider paying for its sequence of coding assignments and projects if that was my goal. You can try the interactive demo chapters first.

freeCodeCamp includes the projects and certifications

freeCodeCamp lists web development, Python, relational databases and other curriculum routes. Its FAQ explicitly includes courses, projects and certifications in its free offering.

You can complete the interactive lessons and projects without paying for a career tier. I'd use it if the path covered the skills I wanted to learn.

Its FAQ estimates about 300 hours for each certification. Choose the route you need and be sure to budget time for its assignments. That published estimate isn't actually a deadline you have to match or anything like that.

For free full-stack coursework, Mebish P described a positive experience while still working through the course:

Learned coding faster than i thought, The full stack course is very good and im currently learning, so far very good. Giving these out with a free certificate is awesome

What Codecademy Pro adds

Codecademy's catalog includes language courses, skill paths and career paths across web development, computer science, data and other subjects. I'd consider it if one of those specific sequences matched my goal better.

Its plan comparison lists portfolio projects, assessments and an AI learning assistant. Pro also includes technical interview preparation, an interview simulator and certification paths. I'd check whether I'd actually use those features though before choosing a paid plan. Live bootcamps and coaching are separate purchases.

Career paths aren't included in Plus on the plan table, so if that's why you're buying, just choose Pro IMO. Codecademy advertises free trials for both paid plans.

Codecademy can be worth sampling for introductory classes. Andy S's review starts with that use case and adds a positive update after trying more classes:

It's great in the beginner classes.

Update: I have also tried more classes and it's really fun and I have learned a lot.

Annual prices aren't monthly subscriptions

Codecademy lists Plus at $14.99/month billed annually or $29.99 billed monthly. Pro is $19.99/month billed annually or $39.99 billed monthly. Those annual equivalents aren't the actual month-to-month price.

Try a freeCodeCamp path and a free Codecademy course in the subject you want - there's nothing stopping you. I'd want to know which lesson format I preferred before actually paying for access. By the way, in my experience, if an edtech platform EVER makes you pay before trying at least a handful of lessons, it's a massive red flag.

For Python/Go backend work, Boot.dev's backend path is another option. Its annual membership is $399, billed yearly, and its listed career paths don't include frontend development. Continued interactive assignments are paid after demo chapters, with later lessons remaining readable for free.

That's the paid curriculum I'd try for a focused route into those backend languages. One learner, Alex, described starting without prior knowledge:

Subscribed for a year and learned how to code in go and python from nothing. Great courses, great discourse via discord.

The Codecademy alternatives list also covers more options, so check that out if it's helpful - good luck and have fun!
