The methodology matters. Course Report combined 1,181 responses received in 2020 with 936 responses from its 2019 survey and 926 from its 2018 survey. That produced 3,043 qualified responses from alumni of 101 schools. Those years describe survey waves, not three graduation cohorts; respondents could have graduated before 2018.
The report also says that all figures were self-reported, participation was voluntary, and respondents were offered an incentive for a $500 Amazon gift card. A voluntary alumni survey can be useful, but it cannot establish whether respondents represent every graduate. It also does not capture students who enrolled but did not graduate.
The underlying findings are narrower than their common shorthand:
